SUMMARY:

This study seeks to analyze the contribution of the school librarian in the information literacy development of users of the private education network in the municipalities of Crato and Juazeiro do Norte, in the State of Ceará, through an analysis of the current panorama of Brazil and Cariri, with the general objective of presenting a proposal for the implementation of disciplines for the curriculum of library science at the Federal University of Cariri (UFCA), with disciplines on Information literacy with an emphasis on the following areas: reading practices in the school library, learning, critical thinking and training of readers; information literacy and practices that support the development of information skills; use of information and communication technologies in information literacy; education in libraries and, finally, the skills required of librarians in the labor market, under the following specific objectives: to analyze the theoretical-conceptual perspectives, the characteristics and applications of information literacy; describe and relate which actions, products, services and studies and user education librarians and/or school library staff have offered to users, to encourage the development of information literacy with the purpose of preparing five course summaries for the course of UFCA Librarianship with suggestions for support materials on the subject. In this research, we used the phenomenological approach, seeking a direct description of the experience of these realities in the literature of the area. As a frame of reference for the study, ethnomethodology is used because it analyzes beliefs and behaviors, adapting to the objective of the research. It is also an applied research, with an exploratory approach of a descriptive nature, with the beginning of the research being bibliographic and documental, based on research, articles and books of national and international scope. With this research, it is possible to conclude that it is necessary to rethink library science curricula, in order to insert elective and mandatory disciplines of Information Literacy, since the theme demonstrates national and international relevance and proves to be indispensable for the formation and professional performance of librarians.
