RESUMO:

Photographic images constitute important documents, possessing valuable potential in informational, historical and cultural terms, which are constituents of memory. In the perspective of the present society, the photographic documents present increasing production and consumption that justify, even more, the efforts towards the improvement and the creation of suitable forms for their treatment and real use. In this sense, the study discusses the value of photography as a document, presenting relevant aspects of the literature on documentary analysis, with emphasis on the indexing process. It also presents a proposal for an analysis of the rules and criteria used in the index treatment process carried out at the Federal University of Cariri (UFCA). Through a qualitative approach, we perform a documentary and interpretative analysis related to the processes of production and representation of the photographs in UFCA. This analysis made it possible to identify and present the specificities of this type of document and its special treatment logic and contributions to the construction of criteria for indexing photographic images, which aim to guide the development of an indexation policy for the Institution.
