PAPPUS THEOREMS: AN APPROACH TO THE CALCULATION OF AREAS AND VOLUMES

The need of man for his subsistence has, from antiquity, resulted in the search for mathematical
knowledge. The formalization of the calculation of areas and volumes has challenged
mankind since the rst records found. Currently, these contents are routinely charged
in national assessments. In this work will be presented models for the calculation of areas
and volumes using the theorems of Pappus. These theorems simplify the calculation of
areas and volumes of rounded bodies, such as the right circular cylinder, the cone and
the sphere. We will still make some applications of these theorems to calculate areas of
surfaces of revolution and volumes of solids of revolution.
