RESUMO:

The substitution of crude oil as a raw material for fuel manufacture depends on a renewable substitute that allows the use of much of the infrastructure dedicated to human mobility in large-scale, which are largely dependent in liquid fuels. In this sense, there is an interest in cellulosic ethanol, produced from the polysaccharides present in the plant cell wall, since biomass is considered an inexpensive and abundantly available feedstock and that can generally be produced in areas close to ethanol producing plants. From this perspective, the grass species Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. (guinea grass, homotype of Panicum maximum) can be used as raw material to obtain second generation bioethanol, since this species has important characteristics for this purpose, especially regarding the amount of fermentable sugars present in its biomass. However, studies focusing at surveying the germplasm of Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. found in the Cariri region of Ceará (Brazil) and its characterization from anatomical, morphological, biochemical or molecular information is still absent. In this work, we evaluated the potential of ecotypes harvested in regions with distinct climate subtypes in the Cariri region, and commercial cultivars of grass species Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. as raw material for the production of second-generation ethanol through of plant growth data (morphophysiology), and the quantification of cell wall polysaccharides and lignin and their biochemical precursors. The results showed that in general the morphophysiological characteristics of ecotypes are like those of improved cultivars for adult plants (90 days after planting). Significant differences were found in saccharide (sucrose, glucose, fructose and reducing sugars) and polysaccharide (starch and cellulose) contents of ecotypes and cultivars in young plants (45 days after planting). The extrapolation of these last data to adult plants allows us to conclude that Cariri ecotypes have potential to be used as raw material in the production of lignocellulosic ethanol
