SUMMARY:

American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) is an endemic disease in the municipality of Barbalha
in the state of Ceará, one of the Brazilian states with the highest number of ACL cases registered.
In 2009, Ceará registered 993 cases of ACL, and its municipalities such as Barbalha, Ibiapina and
São Benedito stood out showing 25.6% of the total. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze
the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients with American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis - ACL
seen at the Medical Specialties Outpatient Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine (FAMED) of the Federal
University of Cariri (UFCA) in Barbalha-CE, the entomological aspects related to the epidemiology
of the disease, identify the vectors involved in transmission and the species of Leishmania
circulating in this municipality. For this, the clinical-epidemiological data will be obtained through
the patients' data collection form. The evaluation of entomological aspects and the identification of vectors will be carried out by capturing phlebotomine sandflies from the patients' homes using CDC-

type traps. Molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing

will be used to identify the species circulating in the region from the samples of patients and from
the collected sandflies. It is expected, with this work, to find elements that can contribute to local
public policies, in the prevention and control of ACL
