SUMMARY:

Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a zoonotic viral disease generally identified in endemic regions. However, in 2022, cases of mpox with different characteristics from small outbreaks that previously occurred in non-endemic regions were identified in several non-endemic countries, including Brazil. This study sought to describe mpox cases in the five macro-regions of Brazil and correlate them with demographic and socioeconomic indicators. Its objective was to analyze the relationship between these indicators and confirmed mpox cases. This is an ecological cross-sectional observational study, with a secondary data source. The data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel and subjected to complex network analysis using the JASP STATICS program in version 0.17.1 using the Bayesian analysis method with the ggm estimator at a 0.05 level of statistical significance. The mpox cases were subjected to correlation analysis with the variables: Social Vulnerability Index (IVS), Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI), Illiteracy Rate (TA), Gini Index (GI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP) , Distance from first mpox case (DPC) AIDS cases (CA), mpox incidence rate (TI), Maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and Deaths from mpox. Of a total of 10,967 confirmed and probable cases, there was a higher frequency in males (9,925; 90.95%), between 30 and 39 years old (n = 4,116; 39.3%) and race/color reported predominantly black (n = 4,639; 49.4%). Regarding gender identity, (n=7,626; 87.7%) reported identifying as cis men. Regarding sexual orientation, (n= 3,731; 60.3%) declared themselves homosexual and 5,330 (53.7%) declared they had sex with men. The most common symptoms included rash (66.9%), fever (58.5%), genital lesion (44.6%), and headache (39.6%).
The results of network analyzes by region of Brazil reveal that the strongest positive correlations in the network in the North region occurred between IT and Cases (0.965) and TA and IVS (0.618), in the Northeast region they occurred between IT and Cases (0.721), TA and RMM (0.665) and TA and IVS (0.639), in the Southeast region between DPC and TA (0.847) and TI and CA (0.708), in the South region between IVS and RMM (0.897) and Casos and TI (0.852) and in the Central-West region they occurred between RMM and CA (0.597) and DPC and TA (0.534).
