SUMMARY:

Cancer remains one of the main public health problems, representing the first or second cause of premature death in most countries. Among the various affected sites, the oral cavity and oropharynx are among the most frequent, with a high fatality rate. The present study describes the epidemiological characteristics of deaths from mouth and oropharyngeal cancer in Brazil between 2001 and 2020, through the analysis of the temporal trend in mortality. There was a contrast in trends in Brazil and in the regions for mouth and oropharyngeal cancer in the period analyzed. The oropharynx is the site most associated with death among men, while in women there was a greater association with neoplasms in unspecified parts of the mouth and tongue. When mapping the death rate by state, there was a change in the classification of federative units between one time frame and another.
